Pawns Pawns Pawns Pawns Pawns Pawns Pawns Pawns !
Even people who have never learned the rules or played a game, still can relate to what a 'pawn' is.
PAWNS ARE SIMPLY AWESOME :)
You should learn about center pawns, poison pawns, pawn chains, doubled pawns, tripled pawns, passed pawns, pawn islands, isolated pawns, backwards pawns............. S O O N. However for right now, start off by memorizing the following '813' group, well enough to explain them all to a beginner.
The 8 pawns can do these thirteen things:
(1) One square forward (always allowed except if blocked)
(2) Two squares forward (only on first move ~jumps off the front porch)
(3) Right tackle DIAGONALLY one square (only piece which captures differently than it moves)
(4) Left tackle DIAGONALLY one square (only piece which captures differently than it moves)
(5) EN PASSANT RIGHT! Makes an enemy pawn move 1 not 2 squares) This is the most misunderstood move in chess.
(6) EN PASSANT LEFT! (by making enemy pawn move 1 square and not 2) Once again, I must tell you that this move is very unknown. You need to spend time learning this special move.
(7) They are the 'One way wonders'. Pawns never go backwards or retreat like other pieces do. They are like slow caterpillars inching forward square by square to someday be a butterfly. These brave little warriors pieces just head straight for the goal line, where they score by changing into any of the four other pieces!! (Except of course they cannot change into a King)
(8) Promotion to Knight (when last rank is reached)
(9) Promotion to Bishop(when last rank is reached)
(10)Promotion to Rook(when last rank is reached)
(11) Promotion to Queen (when last rank is reached)
(12)Changes its name after every capture it makes!!!
(13) They are the spinal cord or 'Soul of chess'.
They are the most overlooked pieces on the board. They are not even referred to as 'chessmen' or 'pieces' they are just called 'pawns'. They can link up & team into very useful pawn chains & wedges & formations! For example , they can lock the board into an 'unwinnable' position even when your opponent is far ahead in material.
GET TO KNOW THE PAWNS BECAUSE PAWNS ARE SIMPLY AWESOME
It has been said that “If you never lose a pawn you will never lose a game”
YOU WILL SEE an increase in your Elo chess ratings very soon.
Don't ever get discouraged, just keep playing and taking notes
