"~Chess drills + skills = improvement~

Students should know the following well, before proceding to the 200 drills.
KNOW THESE & KNOW THESE WELL,
because good drills make good skills!

    1. Put 3 white pawns on a3,b3,c3 and 3 black pawns on a5,b5,c5. Can you break thru? This is a common position, which occurs often in real games. Learn the secret so that you do not have to figure it out when it happens. You want to know this one!

    2. Know about attacking the opponents 'porch'. For white, this is the 2nd rank, black should get a one of his rooks to the 2nd rank. It's a very powerful move, once there the rook can basically start mopping up pawns and there is most often not a good defense for this. Conversely, white should seize on an opening to jump to blacks 7th rank. It boxes in the king, and allows for capturing pawns easily. They are like sitting ducks. Ths power move, frequently signals the end of the game is near. KNOW THIS ONE TOO!!

    3. Q + K vs. K is another common one. Put one Queen and King against just the other King. Play it out until checkmate. This could be done in 21 moves or less, watch out for stalemate!

    4. R + R + K vs. K is a good one to know. Put 2 rooks and King against just the other King. Play it out until checkmate. This should be done in 21 moves or less, watch out for KxR. Avoid this by either keeping the rooks connected or by distancing them. Mate has to occur on the edge.

    5. R + K vs. K is also essential. Put one Rook and King against just the other King. Play it out until checkmate. This could be done in 21 moves or less, and don't lose that Rook, or else it would be stalemate!
